![]() There’s also a moment where Uncle Remus, the kindly old man who shares the animated folk stories with the movie’s young white lead, talks about how much he misses the past-a past in which he would’ve been a slave, and not just a sharecropper with a nominal amount of freedom.ĭisney wisely left all of that out of Splash Mountain. Not that there was much of one: Southern Black sharecroppers were still subject to racist laws and practices that prevented them from enjoying the freedoms they had been granted. The movie basically says that Black people were better off when they were toiling in the fields for white landowners, and although technically the time period in which its set would make Remus a sharecropper and not a slave, the movie avoids addressing the difference between those two. Its racism is overt, but not in the aggressive, transparently hateful way that The Birth of a Nation’s is it wants to be a heartfelt depiction of racial harmony, but in the process it gives a deeply ahistorical picture of what race relations were like in the South after the Civil War, while also encouraging Black people to be happy with a system that inherently dehumanizes them. I’m just old enough to have seen the movie in the theater during its last rerelease in 1986, and mostly all I remember is that, other than the songs and cartoons, it’s beyond boring. Here’s a bit of context for people who haven’t ridden Splash Mountain or seen Song of the South. Most people seem more excited about the prospects of a ride based on a popular, recent film starring a beloved Disney princess than they are about a ride that goes out of its way to cover up the unloved and disowned 75-year-old film that it’s based on. ![]() (There might be some overlap there?) But the overall response was refreshingly positive. Disney traditionalists, who grouse about any changes to the theme parks-complaints I often find myself agreeing with-were unhappy. You can’t separate Splash Mountain from Song of the South, and there’s no reason to reference that movie at a theme park.Įarlier this week Disney announced that it would be retheming Splash Mountain at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom into a ride based on the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog-the first (and so far only) Disney animated feature to star a Black lead character. A movie that’s based on a white man’s commercial adaptations of African folktales and slave stories. But it’s still inherently linked to a movie that Disney has been embarrassed by for four decades-a movie that portrays race relations in 19th century Georgia in a positive, nostalgic light. ![]() ![]() Yes, the ride ignores the more blatantly problematic portions of the movie-there’s no Uncle Remus, no human characters, no references at all to race relations or sharecropping. It stars characters from Song of the South, the 1946 film that Disney has kept hidden since 1986-three years before the first Splash Mountain even opened. Splash Mountain might seem to be about as perfect as theme park rides get, but it has one major foundational flaw that should’ve prevented it from ever leaving the drawing board. And despite all that, it’s absolutely time for the current version of Splash Mountain to go. When you look at what makes a great theme park ride-the synthesis of theme, visuals, music, story and ride experience-it’s hard to find any design flaws on the surface. Heck, I ranked the California version as the best ride in Disneyland. It’s one of the best rides ever made by Disney, and even though it didn’t really exist when I was a kid (I was a teenager when it opened at Disney World, the only Disney park I went to growing up, and thus already had firmly established favorites at the Magic Kingdom that were deeply entrenched by nostalgia), it’s still one of my favorite rides at any Disney park. ![]() ![]() ![]() Intel Core i5 (11th-, 12th-gen) or AMD Ryzen 5 (3000 or 5000 series). The specs we'd suggest for a basic Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine: ![]() Basic Windows PC tower (starting around $620) These general configurations should serve you well, especially if you shop around for frequent deals. That processor power and drive potential are particularly crucial if you're planning to use your personal computer as a gaming PC or a graphics-editing powerhouse.Ī desktop computer is generally going to come in the form of either a tower or an all-in-one (with an integrated screen), though there are smaller designs for tighter spaces. And another of the best desktop PC features is that you can get a decent bit more power and expandability than you could from a laptop, along with a powerful processor and a higher quality hard drive or solid-state drive for storage. Not only are desktops built more solidly, but not moving around much contributes to far less wear and tear than your conventional laptop will see. The best feature of desktop PCs is the durability and longevity they provide. There's much to be said for the portable convenience of laptops and tablets, but if you spend most of your day at a desk, it's nice to have a more ergonomic setup and a big-screen monitor - or even one of those multiple-monitor arrays. Only one-fifth of computers sold are desktops, these days, but if you look at the available features and storage in the more traditional home and office offerings, you'll see that the trusty desktop computer has a lot worth considering. ![]() ![]() ![]() My greatest enjoyment is seeing customers catch fish, particularly younger anglers. "HTML5 has matured to the point where most in the industry are moving to it." "Moving to HTML5 is important to someone like Netflix, which wants to be as platform agnostic as possible," said Mike McGuire, an analyst with Gartner. Some users, especially those running Macs, have also criticized Silverlight for hogging their machines' processors, slowing other tasks to a crawl or making their systems overheat. Mozilla's Firefox, while not going that far, now automatically blocks all plug-ins except for Adobe's Flash Player, making the user "click-to-play" a plug-in. Microsoft, for example, has banned plug-ins from Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) on Windows RT, the scaled-down edition aimed at tablets, and on the "Modern" user interface (UI), formerly known as "Metro," on Windows 8. Park and Watson defended the switch to HTML5 with well-worn arguments, including distrust of plug-ins on security grounds, but they also pointed out that browsers, even on the desktop, are shifting to a no-plug-in model. Although the technology was used by NBC to stream the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 Winter Olympics, the network switched to Google-owned YouTube to provide the streaming infrastructure for last year's London Games. We perform each of these tests using all of the interfaces that the drive supports. It uses the Windows Explorer or macOS Finder to copy a 1.23GB test folder full of several different file types from the testbed's internal drive to the external hard drive being tested. The final test for external drives is a drag-and-drop test. We also use Crystal DiskMark's 4K tests to measure random reads/writes, which reflect data activity in which the drive is fetching and writing scattered files and pieces of files across the hard drive or solid-state drive. Crystal DiskMark's sequential-read tests measure read/write activity with data written in a large contiguous block on the drive, which is similar to how manufacturers themselves test drives to advertise their performance. We also use the Crystal DiskMark utility for a second opinion on throughput. These scores are useful in discovering the theoretical maximum speed that a drive can achieve. ![]() But it also returns some useful throughput measurements.īlackMagic offers both a read score and a write score, which we also compare with those of other, similar drives. This utility is typically used to discern whether a given drive has enough throughput to play back specific video formats smoothly. We use the macOS-only BlackMagic Disk Speed Test (Opens in a new window) app from professional media software firm DaVinci to perform this test. Our next test measures a drive's throughput in bits per second. The score is only meaningful relative to other scores. We mention this score in each review and compare it with the scores that other, competing drives received. The PCMark 7 Secondary Storage test results in a proprietary score that is usually in the thousands. These simulated workloads include a Windows Defender virus scan, an image-import task, a video-editing session, and application launches. The Secondary Storage test is trace-based, which means it measures how quickly software commands are performed during everyday workloads to which you might subject your PC. The company's benchmarking apps are used not only by publications like PCMag, but also by drive and PC manufacturers themselves. Our most wide-ranging benchmark is the PCMark 7 Secondary Storage test. We also test on a 2016 MacBook Pro, using the Type-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, for certain of our tests. We test external drives using an Intel X299-based testbed equipped with all the trimmings, including a USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB Type-C port. So we've designed our drive-testing procedures at PC Labs to approximate the speeds you can expect while accomplishing a comprehensive array of common tasks: reflecting both best-case scenarios, and real-world use. Buying a new internal hard drive can make apps load faster and shorten system bootup times, while springing for a new external drive could shave minutes off your next routine backup or the transfer of your large collection of photos and videos.Ī hard drive's speed can vary significantly based not only on its theoretical top transfer speeds, but also on your usage patterns. ![]() Reading and writing files to and from a hard drive is one of the most crucial choke points in a PC. ![]() ![]() Loops are also an important ingredient in what makes Microcosm special. It is quite easy to get lost by turning knobs when a loop plays, and slowly pushes it towards an atmosphere. In fact, it is quite easy to register a simple loop through Microcosm and build a complete, rich and evolving arrangement simply by changing the parameters. While you can connect an expression pedal and perform some filter sweeps, the way it reacts when you start turning multiple knobs while making it feel like an instrument as much as an effect. This level of interaction and depth also means that Microcosm feels right at home on a desk as it does a pedal desk. When you put several delay lines on top of each other, and the more they are repeated, they create new and increasingly complex rhythms until you reach complete chaos. While Repeats controls the number of times each press is heard. Turning up the activity increases the number of “cranes” or delay lines. A simple example of this would be in the pattern effect, which is a rhythmic delay with several presses. They are also very interactive – that is, changes you make in Activity can affect the way the Repeats control behaves. In short, they are macro controls that are not mapped to a specific parameter, and instead control a number of things depending on the effect you have selected. “In general, Activity gives you” more “or” less “of what each preset does, and Repeats controls how long the effect lasts.” The manual breaks it down pretty well, though: (You can access the secondary controls in light gray by holding down the Shift button.) I say relatively because, while it’s pretty obvious what “mix” does, the “Activity” and “Repeat” controls are a bit vague. ![]() The eight knobs on the left all have relatively clear primary and shift functions. These lights also show value levels, the direction of audio playback and are how to navigate the global menu. Each effect lights up when selected, and the four lights above the center footswitch (which turns the pedal on and off) indicate which particular preset of the effect you have selected. The single encoder on the right navigates through the various presets. There are a number of buttons, lights and knobs on the front that may seem a little intimidating at first, but it’s easy to figure things out once you get started. (This turned out to be a real gift from my power supply to the cheap pedal board introduced a lot of noise.) On the plus side, the Hologram Electronics includes a power adapter in the box, which almost no pedal manufacturers make anymore. This is quite unusual on synths and other guitar pedals and means you may need a TRS to dual TS cable to connect your equipment. My only complaint here is that the stereo input is a single TRS connector as opposed to separate right and left. Around the back you will find the necessary audio inputs and outputs, along with 5-pin MIDI in and out / through, and an expression pedal jack. ![]() |
